Find answers to common questions about tilt & turn window terminology, so you'll know what and where to measure, along with information about installation methods, fabrics, customization options, and ordering. If you need additional assistance, please contact us before placing your order. Unlike traditional blinds, tilt & turn blinds are designed to move with the window as it opens and tilts. Because of this unique design, understanding a few basic parts of your tilt & turn window will make measuring, ordering, and installing your blinds much easier. Don't worry—you don't need to be a window expert. Use the illustration to identify the key parts of a tilt & turn window and the terms you'll see throughout our website. Tilt & turn window blinds from Realistic Design NYC are available in familiar styles such as honeycomb, pleated, roller, Venetian, and Roman blinds. What makes them different is the way they are engineered to work with tilt & turn windows. Unlike traditional blinds that mount to the wall or ceiling, tilt & turn blinds attach directly to the window using specialized mounting systems. Because the blind attaches to the window, you can tilt the window inward or open it like a door without the blind getting in the way of the window's operation. You also reclaim your entire window sill. This unique design provides a clean appearance while maintaining privacy and light control, even when the window is open. Tilt & turn windows can accommodate several blind installation methods, depending on your window construction and your preferences. The four most popular methods are pictured here. Some methods use small screws, while others use high-strength adhesive and require no drilling. Some mount within the glazing bead, while others mount to the face of the window. The right installation method depends on your window’s features, installation requirements, and personal preferences. Each method has its own advantages. The best installation method depends on your window construction, available glazing bead depth, and whether you prefer a drill or no-drill installation. Inside-mount installations position the blind within the inner glazing bead, creating an integrated and minimalist appearance. The standard Between-the-Bead Inside Mount (Drill) installation requires a minimum glazing bead depth of 18 mm (11/16"). If you prefer not to drill into your window, a Between-the-Bead Inside Mount (Adhesive) option is also available using high-strength adhesive strips that attach to the glass. This installation method requires no minimum glazing bead depth. When preferred or when sufficient glazing bead depth is not available, face-mount installations attach the blind directly to the surface of the window sash instead of within the glazing bead. Both drill and no-drill face-mount options are available. If you're unsure which installation method is appropriate, we're happy to review your window photos and measurements before you order. Contact us and we'll help you determine the best installation method for your windows. Both installation methods are excellent choices and provide a secure, reliable installation. If your window allows the drill-in Between-the-Bead Inside Mount option and you're comfortable drilling into your window, it provides the cleanest appearance. This option requires an inner glazing bead depth of at least 11/16" (18 mm). Adhesive installation is an excellent alternative for those who prefer not to drill or whose windows don't have sufficient glazing bead depth. Although both methods use adhesive, they mount the blind differently. Between-the-Bead Adhesive Strips use aluminum adhesive strips mounted on the edges of the glass. This allows the blind to sit closer to the glass for a lower-profile appearance. Each strip is approximately ½ inch wide. Face Mount Adhesive Brackets are compact and attach directly to the face of the window sash, positioning the blind slightly farther from the glass. When fully extended, the blind covers the glass and most of the sash, creating a clean, continuous appearance. For aluminum and PVC windows only. Both systems provide secure, no-drill installation. Our adhesive mounting systems are designed specifically for tilt & turn window blinds and provide a durable, long-lasting installation when installed according to the instructions. Both adhesive installation methods have been extensively tested and perform exceptionally well under normal residential conditions. If your windows receive unusually intense sun exposure or prolonged exposure to extreme heat for hours each day, please consider an adhesive bracket or drill-in installation method rather than adhesive strips, where the adhesive is continuously exposed to outdoor conditions. The glazing bead consists of the four trim pieces that surround and hold the glass in place. These trim pieces are located closest to the glass. The outer glazing bead consists of the four strips that surround the window closest to the glass. Often, the glazing bead on the face of the window has a visible line or seam separating it from the rest of the sash. The ledge that forms between the glass and the edge of the bead is the inner glazing bead. Depending on the installation method, you may need to measure either the depth of the inner glazing bead or from the outer edges (the line or seam) of the glazing bead for face-mounted options. Glazing bead depth determines whether certain installation methods are possible. It refers to the depth of the recessed ledge between the glass and the edge of the inner glazing bead. Some installation options position the blind on this ledge. Glazing bead depth varies by window manufacturer. Some inner glazing beads are as deep as 2". Other windows have less than ½" of depth. Some windows and glass doors may have no depth at all. Measuring glazing bead depth before ordering helps ensure you select the appropriate installation method. Do not include the rubber seal when measuring glazing bead depth. A minimum glazing bead depth is required only for certain installation options. Our Between-the-Bead Inside Mount (Drill) option requires a minimum glazing bead depth of 11/16" (17–18 mm) for honeycomb, pleated, Venetian, and Roman shades. This is because there needs to be a minimum distance between the blind and the glass. The minimum glazing bead depth for the Skiro roller shade is ¾" (18 mm) for all Between-the-Bead installation options. Don't worry. Several installation options are available for windows that do not have sufficient glazing bead depth for the Between-the-Bead Inside Mount (Drill) installation. You may choose the Between-the-Bead Inside Mount Adhesive Strips (Non-Drill) option. This method does not require a minimum glazing bead depth because the aluminum adhesive strips with mounting brackets attach directly to the glass and provide the proper distance between the glass and the blind. You may also choose one of our Face Mount installation options, which attach to the face of the window sash rather than within the glazing bead: Each installation method has its own advantages depending on your window construction and installation preferences. If you're unsure which installation method is best for your window, we're happy to review your window photos and recommend the most appropriate option before you place your order. Contact us for assistance. The rubber seal surrounds the glass on all four sides. The width of the rubber seal varies by window manufacturer. This measurement is required only when choosing the Between-the-Bead Inside Mount Adhesive Strips (Non-Drill) installation method. Providing an accurate rubber seal measurement helps ensure your blind fits properly and operates as intended. Each installation method requires you to measure from different parts of the window. Because your blind is custom manufactured using the dimensions you enter, it's important to follow the measuring instructions for your selected installation method.
